Frequently asked questions
What is Swing?
If you have watched "Swing Kids", "Swingers" or "Malcolm X" you will
know what swing is. Swing is a sound AND a dance.
Swing is an era – a dance and a style of music. It originated in the USA
during the 30s and 40s and was the rebellious “rock’n’roll” of the time.
You will have heard some swing music around and about. Possibly one of
the best know big band swing tunes is Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood”.
Swing dance is the umbrella name for the dances that were danced to
swing music: Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Jitterbug and St Louis
Shag.
What do we teach?
We mainly teach Lindy Hop, a dance done to big band sounds. Lindy Hop
is an African American dance which developed at the Savoy Ballroom in
New York in the 1920s out of the Charleston.
While "Lindy Hop" is the flagship of most swing dancing, we will also
expose you to a range of other great swing dances such as Balboa,
Collegiate Shag, St Louis Shag and 1920s solo and partnered charleston.
Where do we teach?
Auckland city and its suburbs. The easiest way to find out is to visit our
class timetable on our website at www.jitterbugs.co.nz
When can I start?
Check the timetable online to see when the next beginners block course
starts. We run two sets of 4 week beginners courses. You will need to
complete both courses in order to progress to the next level. New courses
are starting all the time, so check out the website – www.jitterbugs.co.nz
Do I need a Partner?
No, just bring yourself! We rotate throughout the class so that you get to
meet lots of new people.
What if I miss a week?
If you miss a few weeks and you feel concerned, you may like to book
yourself in for a one-on-one private lesson.
What is the average age group?
Dancing breaks the age barrier! We have young and old in our classes but
the average age group tends to be 25-35.
What do I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. We suggest flat
shoes for ladies and shoes for all that don’t grip too much. But the
important thing, is that you wear something comfortable.
Where do you guys go swinging?
There are often events around town that we go to and from time to time,
Jitterbugs organises events specifically for our swing dancers. Get yourself
on the mailing list so that you don’t miss out.
